In an introductory physics class, you learn that a body which leaves its origin and returns to it has a net displacement of zero. In these terms, it is indistinguishable from a body that never left
I usually read these in my emails but today I’m writing back. Thank you for sharing a real, heartfelt response to the “what’s the point?” question, since reading poetry leaves me asking the question far more often than it makes me forget it. The only answer that temporarily satisfied me in the past (satisfied the desperation, that is. Never the curiosity) was always along the lines of loss being nothing more than a reminder. That attempting to avoid loss is an attempt to forget the loving, the belonging, and the peace. And who wants to forget any of that?
Today, I found a better answer, thanks to you. Neruda asked me that question when he said “Loving is so short, forgetting is so long”. Dinan answers by saying “Time never stands still. It takes you with it as it goes and you have to trust that you’ll be ready when the cue comes… So if you can’t lend love to the future, why borrow grief from it?“
Dinan, I can not begin to thank you. Your writing is exceptionally expressive, yet it makes me exceptionally speechless. This is simply how deep it hits.
I couldn't even begin to describe how reading this has made me feel as someone who's been grieving many losses, I needed this. Thank you for continuing to write to us Dinan 🤍
Deep and rich letter. Many quotes and words of wisdom could be drawn from it.
